Setting up your web site with great navigation needs some planning.
You will have to think like your visitor. They dont' know what you have, don't even know where to look. You will need to guide them to where you want them to go and help them find your information.
Lets start with some basics, your navigation bar. Short names for each page. But make them simple names. Informational pages, product pages, links about us, contact us all should be organized logically.
Take a look at this web site and the navigation bar.
-
Was it simple to figure out where what you wanted was?
-
Was the names and organization easy to figure out?
-
Did it take you to where you wanted to go?
You need to have this planned out before you have visitors, or they will get lost and leave you.
The next thing you have to have since not everyone thinks the same way, is to have a search feature and a browse feature. Allowing your visitors to find what you want them to find in their own way! You will notice that this web site doesn't have a browse feature. The browse feature isn't that important but it does help those that find it easier to find things.
You notice the links in the footer, another way to help guide people (and search engines). Remember people first, search engines after.
Another way of help guiding people is specials or featured items along the sides and links in the text.
You do need a navigation bar, search, links, featured/specials, and text links to help guide people through your website.
